Toll House Restoration

The Stratford Society collaborated with the Stratford Historic Buildings Trust in a project to restore the old Toll House at the north-western end of Clopton Bridge.

The Toll House was built in 1814. With its crenellated roofline and gothic windows it is a familiar local landmark and an important Grade I listed building. However, it had fallen into serious disrepair and was included on Historic England’s Register of Buildings at Risk.

A project team was formed with the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF), and £500,000 funding was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic England  and others. Completed in August 2017, the project has preserved the historic fabric of the building and provided it with a new use as office space at ground floor and mezzanine levels.
