The Stratford Canal

Russell Poulton – Canal & River Trust

Monday 16 August, 6pm

I’ll talk about the role of the Canal & River Trust in looking after and animating the canal network in Warwickshire, setting out what we do and also how we seek to manage and influence development on and around the canal network along with some of the problems we face. I will also touch on some of our wider priorities, including the development of a Warwickshire Waterway and Canal Strategy in conjunction with the county council.

Russell Poulton is Enterprise Manager at the Canal & River Trust, the charity that looks after and brings to life 2000 miles of canals and rivers. Our waterways contribute to the health and wellbeing of local communities and economies, creating attractive and connected places to live, work, volunteer and spend leisure time. These historic, natural and cultural assets form part of the strategic and local green-blue infrastructure network, linking urban and rural communities as well as habitats. By caring for our waterways and promoting their use we believe we can improve the well-being of our nation.

The video of the presentation may be viewed on the Stratford Society's YouTube channel. In answer to questions, Russell provided information on clean air policies for boats and electrical propulsion for boats. He also drew attention to the fact that towpaths are shared spaces for both walkers and cyclists
