Stratford Houses: Recording and Dating
Dr Nat Alcock – Warwick University
A new research project will be announced, in which 20 or more houses in the town centre will be dated by dendrochronology. The aim is to determine the spread of two disastrous fires in 1594 and 1595, and how quickly the houses were rebuilt.
Dr Alcock will describe the methods employed to record and date the early houses of Stratford, using examples of three houses already recorded: Harvard House, the Falcon Hotel, and the Dower House. He will explain the technique of dendrochronology, i.e. dating wood by the pattern of tree rings.
