Chairman’s Message

Welcome to the Stratford-upon-Avon Society’s web site. We were established as a civic society in 1966 to help preserve the character and appearance of this world famous market town. We have about 400 members and are consulted by all three local authorities on most of the main issues affecting the town’s heritage and environment. We are active members of the Civic Trust and the English Historic Towns Forum.

Our overall objective is to stimulate interest in the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings. To achieve this we

We are often referred to in the local press as “the influential Stratford Society.” This is mainly due to our professionalism and to the pro-active part we play in the town. We are not simply a pressure group trying to prevent any new developments taking place. Stratford is not a museum - but we don’t want it to be a theme park, either. Instead, we promote high quality design, use of appropriate materials and try to ensure that each new building contributes positively to our environment. In doing this, we draw on lessons from other historic towns – both in the UK and abroad – and share these lessons with the town as a whole.

We have recently also tried to contribute to the quality of life in the town by planting trees in Chestnut Walk and by working actively with other groups to control the influx of pestilential Canada geese.

So if you care about the town and want to join our active band of volunteers, please join the Stratford Society today.
